Earth Friendly Cleaning Tips

            * All Purpose Cleaner*

-Mix 1 quart warm water with 1tsp. liquid soap,lemon juice and or vinegar.

            *Ant Control*

-Pour a line of cream tartar at place where ants enter the house.

-Sprinkle red chili,paprika or dried peppermint where ants enter house.

           *Carpet Cleaner*

-Clean stains immediately with club soda.

-Sprinkle cornstarch and vacuum.

-Rub dry Baking soda into grease.

-Combine equal amounts/parts vinegar and water to remove winter salt.

          *Disinfectant*

-Use 1 cup of Borax in 1 gallon of water.

          *Drain Opener*

-Pour a handful of baking soda and a cup of vinegar followed by boiling water into drain.

         * Fabric Softener*

-Rinse cottons and wool with 2 cups of vinegar added to wash rinse cycle.

          *Floor Cleaner*

-Mop with 1 cup white vinegar mixed with 2 gallons of water.Polish with club soda.

          *Furniture Polish*

-Wipe with mixture of 1 tsp. lemon oil in 1 pint mineral or vegetable oil.

          *Glue/Decal Remover*

-Soak in white vinegar

-rub with peanut butter

-pull stickers off with the stickey part of sticker

          *Removing Bubble Gum*

-Rub with peanut butter

          *Grout Cleaner*

-Use toothbrush with either undiluted vinegar,3 parts baking soda with 1 part water,toothpaste or denture cleaner.

         * Insecticides*

-Plant garlic cloves at one foot intervals.

-Use traps or spray soaps

-Blend 6 cloves crushed garlic,1 minced onion,1 tsp dried hot pepper,and 1 tsp. pure soap in 1 gallon hot water,let sit 1-2 days.Strain and spray on plants.

            *Insect Repellents*

-Use chamomile tea as a lotion.

-Burn citronella candles,punk or mosquito coils.

            *Metal Polish*

-Brass - Worcestershire sauce

-Chrome - Apple cider vinegar or baking soda with soft cloth.

-Copper - Vinegar and salt : or lemon and salt

-Pewter - Rub with fine steel wool dipped in olive oil,wash in soapy water and dry.Or polish with cabbage leaves.

-Silver - Soak in 1 quart warm water with 1 tsp. baking soda,1 tsp. salt,and a piece of aluminum foil: or rub with ammonia and a soft cloth: or soak in buttermilk or sour milk overnight.

-Stainless steel - Wash with 1 quart warm water and 3 tblsp. baking soda rinse with hot water.

             *Mildew/Soap Scum*

-Try a cup of baking soda,a cup of vinegar and warm water.

            *Moths*

-Try one of these: Cedar Chips,lavendar flowers,rosemary,mint,white peppercornscloves or dried lemon peels.

            *Oven Cleaner*

-Sprinkle salt and baking soda on spill while the oven is still warm. Scour with steel wool and baking soda.

-For Baked on grease,wipe with ammonia,let sit overnight: then scrub with baking soda.

             *Rust Stains*

-Rub with lemon juice and salt : thoroughly rinse with water.

             *Scorch Marks*

-Soak fabric with hydrogen peroxide ,then rinse. Or alternate rubbing the area with a lemon slice,then wiping with a dampened sponge until stain disappears.

              *Stain Remover*

-Make a paste of club soda lemon juice and hot water

              *Deodorant Stains*

-Rub lightly with white vinegar and launder as usual.

              *Wine/Coffee Stains*

-Clean immediately with club soda

              *Coffee/Tea Stains*

-Equal parts moist salt and vinegar; or baking soda solution of 3 Tblsp. baking soda and 1 quart water.

                *Toilet Bowls*

-Using baking soda and vinegar paste,let sit for 2 hours then scrub.

                *Mineral Deposits /Build-Up*

-Soak a cloth in white vinegar and wrap around or lay on area that has mineral build-up.Let set for an hour and check.Wipe of deposits.Repeat if needed. Shower heads and faucets tend to get mineral build-up especially if you have a well.

                *Window Cleaner*

-Use 1 cup vinegar to 1 gallon water

-use newspaper to dry glass

          

 


Recipes

Soft Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

1 1/2 cup raisins

1 1/2 cup water

1 cup shortning

1 1/2 cup brown sugar (or white)

1 1/2 vanilla extract

2 1/2 cups flour

2 1/4 cups quick oats or regular oats

1 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp baking powder

1 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp cloves

Put water and raisins in pan and bring to a boil and then simmer just until raisins start to plump,then cool and save 1/2 cup water from raisins ( if not enough water add enough to make 1/2 cup liquid for batter).

Cream shortning and sugar. Add Vanilla eggs,raisin liquid,flour,baking powder,baking soda,cinnamon,cloves,oats and raisins.Mix well,drop by teaspoonful on greased baking sheet.Bake at 350* for 10 minutes or until lightly brown makes 3 dozen small cookies. ENJOY !
